The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) said that it would commence the arrest and prosecution of Abuja residents who cross the highways, instead of using the pedestrian bridges.
In an interview LEADERSHIP in Abuja yesterday, the Commandant of NSCDC, FCT command, Commandant Patrick Ukpan noted that the pedestrian bridges were provided in parts of the FCT by the FCT administration to make life easier for residents.
Ukpan pointed out that Abuja residents are expected to make judicious use of these bridges, which government has spent so much money to provide, but wondered why many people would prefer to take the risk of crossing the highways.
He explained that the law establishing the NSCDC it empowers us to arrest, investigate, detain, with or without a warrant, anybody suspected to have committed a crime or any other act against the laws of the land.
The commandant also noted that the present FCT administration has done so much in creating walkways in and around the pedestrian bridges in the city to encourage pedestrians to use them.
He continued: “The use of pedestrian bridges is a culture we must try to make people imbibe. We must realize that even in advanced societies, pedestrian bridges are not built everywhere. So any where the bridge is, no matter the distance, people must walk onto it and learn to use it for their own good.”
