Nobody can understand Nigerian music like the African and that is why Nigerian musicians are now killing it wherever they are. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM writes on the latest releases that are making Nigerian and Africans proud.
For many years, Nigerian musicians have continued to set the pace for African music, allowing others to follow. Afro beat, Afro Pop etc have taken over the industry.
Music is not only food to the soul but also a means of bringing people from all walks of life together.
Young Nigerian musicians who started off in the craft today are now world renowned. People like Olamide, Wizkid, Davido, Falz, Runtown, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade etc are making lots of wave not just in Nigeria but across the globe. Nigrian born American artiste, Wale featured Wizkid, Davido & Olamide in his new album ‘Shine.’
Their songs are now a force to be reckoned with anywhere around the world.
Starting off with Olamide’s release of ‘O baby’, from “THE GLORY” album, anyone who hasn’t grabbed a copy must be dozing off the hook. The album which is packed with fire blazing hits was released in December 2016.
The monster hit that is already enjoying massive love from his fans is titled “Pepper Dem Gang” featuring YBNL’s fresh talent, Davolee and is produced by the wicked producer, Young John.
The song saw Olamide in a pool of enchanting ladies while doing his usual thing with simplicity, moving rhythmically to the beat as the song takes listeners to the chorus.
The ’Letter To Milli’ formally discharged ‘The Glory’ Album. The track off the collection titled ‘Letter To Milli’ saw Olamide going all Eminem on the Pheelz created sick beat.
Watching the video over and over again speaks well of it as the setting and also, the concept of the song alone makes it thick.
The song is not just all about the rap but the different way the artiste presented himself in the song. Olamide has really grown no doubt. He is no longer that ‘Eni Duro’ young lad you used to know.
Also, another artiste representing the country very well is international super Starboy, Wizkid whose collaboration with Drake has given him lots of credits in the music world.
Wizkid is the hottest African singer at the moment. The global and chat topping entertainer who has continued to bring glory and pride to the country, added another feather to his wings as the Afrobeats star bags seven (7) nominations at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards , thanks to his feature on Drake‘s global hit “ One Dance ”. The categories are: Top Hot 100 Song , Top Selling Song , Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top Collaboration, Top R&B Song and Top R&B Collaboration .
All of his shows are sold out. He is doing very well for himself and no longer that ‘young boy’ under Banky W.
Davido is one artiste that has continued to receive criticism from critics even though they hold no grudge against him. His collaboration with Meek Mills ‘Fans Mi’ was responsible for that. I wrote against the display of weapons and how drugs were used in the video on LEADERSHIP July 25, 2015 ‘Why Davido’s Fans Mi Should Be Banned From Being Aired In Nigeria’ [http://leadership.ng/ entertainment/449392/why- davidos-fans-mi-should-be- banned-from-being-aired-in- nigeria]. The artiste heeded that advice and dropped a banger that has continued to top the music chart across Africa.
‘IF’ video by Davido under Sony Music was directed by Director Q in London and the song is produced by our own Artiste of the Year, Tekno. The songs have continued to top the music chart and fans alike are also commenting.
At the beginning of the year, Davido said via his Instagram (@davidoofficial) that he was going “Back 2 Basics” and that seems to be what he is doing in every aspect of his music career. He has reunited with his original management and has also turned down a numerous amount of endorsement deals, which has people wondering what he may be up to.
According to Notjustok.com, OBO’s next step is the “Back2Basics” tour, today Davido announces that he will be going on a first of its kind nationwide tour of Nigeria. This is a huge step for the Nigerian music industry, as a tour of this magnitude has never happened before. He will be hitting the road with his DMW team made up of Dremo, DJ Ecool, Yonda, Ichaba & Mayorkun to perform in eight cities. This tour is years in the making and will see Davido performing all his hit songs from when he burst on the music scene in 2011 to the current #1 song in Africa. Davido is known for his energy on stage so expect that same energy the whole tour and more. The tour will be touching Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Benin, Ilorin, Osogbo, etc.
Chike: Since I downloaded the song, I have been rocking it. I can’t stop dancing.
Tonia: any song Tekno has a hand in is sure going to be great… It’s a pure Tekno sound and the lyrics too. But I must commend Nigerian artistes for making us proud.
Seun: Nigerians artistes have gone far, just imagine the song O Baby by Olamide and check out Runtown. Those guys are musically crazy.
Simi: I am a die-hard fan of Nigerian music. I always put Olamide, Wizkid and Davido’s jam on repeat till my 2000Amh capacity battery cautioned me that it’s low battery. Nigerian artistes have gone far.
