Manchester United will be without key men Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the rest of the season after confirming they have suffered ‘significant knee ligament damage’.
The news is a huge blow to United’s hopes of winning the Europa League and finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
Swedish star Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in his first season in English football while Rojo has established himself as a first-choice centre back under Jose Mourinho.
In a statement on Saturday the club said: ‘Detailed investigations on the injuries sustained by Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Thursday’s Europa League match have confirmed significant knee ligament damage in both players that requires specialist opinions over the coming days.
‘Estimations of time to full recovery will only be possible once definitive treatment plans have been decided after these consultations.’
The development casts some doubt over Ibrahimovic’s prospects of staying at Old Trafford for a second year and extending his playing career beyond his 36th birthday in October.
Earlier this week, Sportsmail revealed that Los Angeles are ready to offer £5million a season for the striker, and their offer still stands. They are happy for Ibrahimovic to do his rehab before the MLS season starts
